Simpler Alternatives to Publishing Blog Posts

In Blogging on September 23, 2008 at 7:10 pm

I need a way to make this blogging stuff a bit more efficient. I work about 10 hours per day, 7 days a week here in Iraq (which is less than I work when I’m in uniform). That sill leaves me with 14 hours per day to sleep, eat and run errands. If I use up 9 hours of that with sleeping and stuff, that leaves me with about 5 hours per day of blogging or relaxing.

The problem is, I don’t always have Internet but still want things to post pretty consistently. I need a way to get content and push content when I’m not able to connect. I’ve found two ways to do that…

Researching a new server

In Blogging on September 22, 2008 at 1:30 pm

I was going to wait until this site started generating its own income to cover the costs of hosting the blog on its own server but there’s just too many limitations with keeping it at .WordPress that keep me from doing just that.

Getting a shared server is pretty cheap anyway so I might as well just go ahead and do it. There are a lot of plugins that will generate income that I can’t use now and I don’t want to mess with moving it when I have a lot of pages (all the internal links will have to change for one thing).

So where am I going to put it? [...]

Blog updates

I  managed to figure out how to forward http://Realizing.Me and http://RealizingMe.com to this blog. It was kind of confusing. There’s an awful lot of pseudo-help out there where people will just paraphrase the vague generic help on another site.

That’s fine if you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing on a simple thing but doesn’t help if you have no idea what you’re doing and there’s many ways to interpret what they’re saying. Assholes.

I changed both the ‘@’ and ‘www’ to URL Redirects at http://www.realizingme.wordpress.com. (including the trailing period). That forwards everyone to this site but changes it to the wordpress link as soon as they get here. You might remember from yesterday’s post about setting up that this is the box I’m talking about…

Starting the blog

In Blogging on September 17, 2008 at 8:57 pm

I chose the name ‘Realizing Me’ because it fit the theme of what I was going for: self-realization, and it was available in not only WordPress but also as Realizingme.com and Realizing.me . I’m planning on moving the blog to a different server when the traffic grows. I have too much writing to do it now!

I’m starting off with the site at WordPress because I already have a blog there (a personal one for family and friends) and it works with Windows Live Writer, which has made my blogging much easier.

I’m currently looking into purchasing RealizingMe.com and Realizing.Me from   GoDaddy so they’ll be available when I need them. I doubt I’ll host the site with them since it’s kind of hard to import a wordpress site to their servers but I don’t have to worry about them as much for the name. Let’s see how that goes…

Realizing Me – The Beginning

In Miscellaneous Thoughts on September 17, 2008 at 8:32 pm

imageSo what is this blog all about?

I spent a great deal of time trying to find a purpose for my site. I knew I had an urge to write something but had no idea what I wanted to write about. I spent many hours looking through naming conventions, SEO hints, lists of the most popular blog names etc.

Those of you who know me know that I’ve had a lot of time on my hands for a while now (I’m in Iraq right now working for the US Government and I’m also a US Army Reservist). I’ve had a great deal of time to start thinking about my life and where I want to take it. I’ve started writing a lot; articles, short stories, blog posts and even the start of a couple of novels. I read over and over that you need to write a blog about something that interests you or that you know about. Then it hit me: The only thing I really know is me and what I want in life – and that changes with every day…
